Hello Dear Reader,
I grew up when salad was: cucumber, lettuce, tomato, beetroot and salad cream. It might have a slice of ham or grated cheese. Nothing fancy, maybe some boiled potatoes. Food was much simpler then.
Every now and then, I just want to eat the food of my childhood, such as a very simple old fashioned salad. No baby leaves, nothing sprouted, not a pea shoot in sight. Some boiled gammon, a few slices of pickled beetroot, boiled potatoes, half an avocado each and a dollop of coleslaw. Another favourite of mine is sliced boiled egg with salad and it has to be salad cream and never mayonnaise.
Another lovely memory I have of 'retro' salad was that we only had it in the summer and imported out of season salad just wasn't around. Still, I'm not keen on salad in the winter and want winter veggies of greens and root vegetables.
One of the reasons I choose to stick to a thrifty food budget of home cooking is that my preference is for simple food. Retro? You decide.
I'm also on count down, all that saving, putting something aside means it three weeks to the day until I get on a ferry and off on our holiday. By this time of the evening, we'll be loading up the car ready to get the over night ferry. It'll be a budget holiday but we really don't mind and are really looking forward to it.
Until tomorrow,
Love Froogs
