Save water and save money

Hello Dear Reader,

If Jesus had been born in Cornwall, and the wise men had brought him precious gifts, one of them would have been a bucket of the local water. Sheesh! It's expensive.

Our water bill has increased in this house. It's due in part to a gas boiler that heats our water. The water has to run cold for a long while before we get any hot. So much water that I've estimated that we would use less water if we ran the bath and then shared the water. It would be less water than showering. The good thing about bathing is that the water is sitting there to be used all day.

I flush the loo with the water. However, if I had a veggie garden then I would water it with the same water. I know some of you would balk at that idea but I grew up eating vegetables watered with bath water shared by children and probably piddled in too! That's children for you! I'm still here and that's all the experimentation I need.

I could also wash the car with it, or wash down the garden path. I could clean the windows. I could also soak dirty clothes.

In time, I will change the water heating system so I can just have an on demand electric shower. It used less water.

You might wonder how this would work with children? I always got up first, got washed and dressed and then got them up and dressed. The water would cool down before I put them into it. It did work. Showers are a new thing here in the UK, I didn't have one in my house when the children were young and we all took a daily bath.

It's a tiny money saving method in our home but it does make a difference.

Over to you, how do you keep your water bill affordable?
